Each week we present a devotional that was written by one of our partners at One Community Church. This week’s devotional is written by Rosemary Knight.  Be blessed!

The Word:
And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:3-6 (NASB)

The Story:

During September, I was able to go on One’s first mission trip. Although I initially struggled with reservations not to go, after much prayer, I decided to participate with a willing spirit. I asked the Lord to guide me during this mission. During the trip, the host shared many emotional stories of people affected by Hurricane Katrina. One such story was of a young lady who had purchased a home after Hurricane Katrina occurred, and 6 years later, still couldn’t afford to remodel the house to make it livable. I witnessed the resolve of this passionate woman. She never grumbled or complained about her situation. Her vocabulary didn’t include “if”, but “when” concerning her faith in Jesus. Sometimes, when situations do not turn out as we desire, hopelessness and discouragement begin to set in. This was a beautiful example of how to persevere through hardships by continuing to have a spirit full of joy and faith in the Lord.

The Reflection:

As Christians, we can have hearts full of contentment and peace knowing that God is with us through every circumstance. Are we viewing circumstances as God’s will, with the knowledge that He has a divine plan? Are we remembering that God’s plan may not look like we think it should, and that God’s blessings will arrive on His timetable?

The Application:

Let us remember to rejoice in the Lord despite the situation. Sometimes we struggle in seeing God’s will when the resolution to challenge is not within our immediate grasp. This week, remain steadfast in your faith and embrace the journey God has planned with a heart full of contentment and peace.

The Prayer:
God, help us not become discouraged when life brings upsetting circumstances. Teach us to always persevere with joy in our hearts. Amen.
