Each week, we share some words of reflection from one of our partners in the form of a devotional. This week’s devotional was written by Charles TaylorThe Word:
“… and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her…” Ephesians 5:21-25 (NASB)

The Story:
At an early age, I noticed the relationship my parents had with each other when it came to making big decisions that affected the entire family. I remember a time when my father brought a new car home. It was obvious from my mother’s reaction that they had not discussed buying the car. My father bought it and she had to accept it. He was the husband, the head, and he had the final word. After getting married and having had an opportunity to be in the Word of God, I understand the relationship God intended for husbands and wives. I am constantly reminded that it is our responsibility to submit ourselves to the needs of one another, and to always show love and respect. The husband leads his wife and family, as he follows the Lord. Through my many years of walking with God, I have learned to be the first to submit, respect my wife, and to love her unconditionally. As a godly husband, I have vowed to never show contempt toward my wife in word or deed because she also is a child of Christ. I continually want to love and honor her in obedience and faithfulness to God’s desires.

The Reflection:
What views do we have about relationship dynamics between husbands and wives? Do those views align with what the Lord purposed? Are we submitting to others by seeking their needs and interests above our own?

The Application:
This week, let us strive to submit to one another by always being first to show love and respect to those around us.

The Prayer:
Lord, we pray that our hearts and mind become more like Yours. Let us each be the first to submit, and show love so You may be glorified in and through our lives. Amen.
