Each week, we present the inspirational words of one of our partners in the form of a devotional. This week’s devotional is presented by Nicole Johnson.

The Word:
“Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” Colossians 3:23-24 (NASB)

The Story:
Teaching my daughter about serving to please the Lord was such a challenge for me. When we moved to Texas four years ago, I immediately began volunteering at church and different organizations in the community. When my daughter asked me why we helped out every week, I explained to her that everything we do should be for the Lord. I told her life is not about us, and every day we rise should be filled with purpose and meaning. I needed her to understand that although we are blessed with a home and other material possessions, those things are meaningless. Keeping this mindset is not always an easy task. Some days, I awake in an unpleasant mood or my managers add extra work to my daily responsibilities. Sometimes my friends and family need favors which require time out of my day. However, I always want to do everything with a smile and a giving heart so it pleases the Lord. I know that I will surely receive a better reward from my Creator than any material gain from impressing others.

The Reflection:
If all of our monetary gifts, friends, and family were taken away from us, would we still feel as if our lives had meaning? How are we living each day to please the Lord and fulfill His purposes?

The Application:
This week, as we work in our jobs, homes, the community, or ministry, let us give of ourselves gracefully, keeping in mind that everything we do is to honor the Lord.

The Prayer:
Lord, forgive us for pursuing endeavors for selfish ambition. Give us hearts that long to seek Your purposes and pleasure. We pray that everything we do brings glory to You alone. Amen
