Each week, we present the inspirational words of one of our partners in the form of a devotional.  This week’s message was written by Anida Smith and it titled, “Love Like God.”

The Word:
“Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.” Romans 12:9-13 (NASB)

The Story:
I came to the Lord after years of resisting a Christian lifestyle. I was trying to escape the judgment and condemnation I thought I would find. I overcame my desire to resist a relationship with God by watching the acts of love and the attitude of Christ demonstrated by my friends and family. I saw the sick rejoicing because they were seeing another day. I saw those in financial strain give what they had to help complete strangers. I saw forgiveness being given freely by those who were betrayed by a loved one. When I asked how they could take a negative situation and turn it into a positive one, the explanation was consistent — it was all about Jesus Christ. I learned from these godly examples that the best way to be a witness for Christ is by consistently and impartially offering Christ-like love to others.

The Reflection:
We should remember that our behavior and attitude are means of ministering to others. How we react to bad news or a difficult situation can influence those around us. How do our demeanors reflect our faith? If our lives are the only examples of godly love someone has access to, what will they learn from watching us?

The Application:
This week, commit to be an example of Christ’s love in all that you do. Be cognizant of how you affect those with whom you come in contact. Remember, ministering to others isn’t just what we say; it’s also what we do.

The Prayer:
God, help me to be a shining example of Christ’s heart and love in my actions and my words. I pray that my acts will be a reflection of Your goodness that will reach others and inspire them to know You as their Lord and Savior.
