Each week, we share a devotional that was written by one of our partners. This week’s words of reflection were written by Robert Witherspoon.
The Word:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1 (NASB)

The Story:
My walk with Jesus started when I was a young man going through life’s pitfalls and obstacles. I was having it hard trying to avoid violence, drugs and jail. Trying to hide from them did not seem to work. It was right there in my face. I could not win alone. It was at that time I knew I needed help. I called on God to help me through these situations because I was not strong enough and I needed His protection. I prayed for a long time. Praying gave me comfort and focus. It put the Word in my mouth and faith in my heart. I know that God is my shelter even in the face of total destruction. He is my eternal refuge, security and peace. As my faith grew, I had to be patient and wait on God. I waited patiently for the Lord. Practicing patience showed trust that God is able to deliver and protect me in any situation.

The Reflection:
What is our first response when trouble arises? What keeps us from turning to the Lord for strength and refuge in all circumstances? Think about how God consistently acts on our behalves.

The Application:
This week, let’s think about a difficult situation we are currently facing. Let’s make the choice to release the strains of this circumstance to the Lord. Let’s go to Him in prayer and allow ourselves to find peace in His protection.

The Prayer:
Lord, allow us to open up our spiritual ears so that we can hear what You are saying to us. Our faith in You, Lord, gives us a burning desire to hear You and trust You are our refuge. As we meditate on your Word, Lord, help us to trust in Your strength. Amen.
