As the series on “Reclaiming Relational Authenticity” comes to a close we are given the final installment to support a healthy marriage and a tool to continue our work independently. 1 Peter 2:17-25 reminds us that as followers of Christ, we have an obligation to apply the example He has provided. Christ extends grace to us every day; we must strive to do the same (Matthew 5:48). We are reminded that by making regular deposits into the “Love Bank” we can build up positive credits in our relationships.
By following these five tips we can ensure we maintain our accounts in the black:
1. Redemptive Behavior…treat your spouse or partner better than they deserve; don’t engage in tit for tat behavior. (Ephesians 5:32)
2. Give your spouse your undivided attention. Schedule time for date night, ask how was your day and just listen, take time to just enjoy their presence. (Mark 3:23-25)
3. Make positive deposits to the “Love Bank”; we keep track of how people treat us. (Matthew 22:36-40; 1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
4. Vision Retreat; dedicate time to create a vision for your marriage together. (Proverbs 29:18)
5. Solve solvable problems; self manage by sharing how you feel without criticizing or attacking, avoid flooding the other person when you’re angry and overwhelmed.
6. Don’t play fair; be self-less, giving, and above all follow Christ’s example, don’t engage in tit for tat behaviors. Let it go and follow Christ.
Action Steps: Get your copy of “Creating a Vision for Your Marriage” from the One Community Book Store. Agree with your spouse on a set time that you will both work through the exercises together to create and document your vision for your marriage over the next three weeks.
