Convicted, But Not Convinced

There have been countless times when I’ve prayed for God to move, and He does. In those moments, I never doubt Him. But when He speaks to something I’m not eager to do, I find myself asking Him to make it even clearer that it’s Him. I’ve begun to recognize this pattern in my own heart, and it made me wonder: How many times have I heard Him but chosen not to believe Him? Or ignored His conviction and done as I pleased?

What happens when we find ourselves doing that? Answer these questions, read today’s scripture, then come back to the questions at the end; see if the Holy Spirit revealed anything different at the end of your devotional time.

Reflection: Where does my unbelief lie? What are my convictions saying? What/Who am I following that I have positioned over God? Am I hearing Him, but yet rebelling? Am I truly marveling at His throne of grace? Today’s reading comes from the book of Hebrews 3:16-19 (ESV): “For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.” Hebrews 4:14-16 (ESV): “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our conviction. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

The warning is real, but so is the invitation. Every conviction from the Holy Spirit is also an invitation back into deeper trust with a Savior who already knows your weakness and is ready to supply the grace you need.

Prayer: Father, help us. Stop us when we’ve rushed ahead of You or depended on our own strength. Convict us whenever we step out of alignment with Your will or ignore the voice of Your Holy Spirit. Father, we believe; help us in our unbelief. Forgive us for the times we’ve heard You but failed to trust and obey. Help us treasure Your conviction as evidence of Your love, and draw us daily to Your throne of grace, where we find mercy and strength to walk in obedience. Thank You for this day and for every blessing You’ve given us. We adore You and give You all the glory. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.

“They were unable to enter because of unbelief… Therefore, let us hold fast our confession. and draw near with confidence to the throne of grace” (Hebrews 3:19 ESV).
