Proverbs 4:23

Scripture

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 4:23 NIV

Connect: We lock our doors at night. We password-protect our phones. We’re careful about what we let into our homes and who we let into our lives. But how often do we think about guarding the one thing that shapes everything else we do: our hearts?

Explain: In Scripture, the heart isn’t just about emotions. It’s the center of who we are: our thoughts, desires, and decisions. Solomon tells us to guard it “above all else,” meaning before we worry about protecting our schedules, our reputations, or our plans, we need to protect what’s happening inside us.

That’s because everything (our words, our choices, our relationships) flows from there. A guarded heart isn’t a closed heart. It’s one that’s intentional about what it lets shape it. Apply: This week, we might ask ourselves: What’s been shaping our hearts lately? Is it Scripture and prayer, or is it stress, comparison, or things we scroll past every day without noticing their effect on us? Guarding our hearts might look like starting the morning with a few minutes of quiet before the noise sets in, or pausing before we react in anger to ask what’s really going on inside. It’s a small, daily choice, but it’s one that shapes everything downstream.

Pray: Lord, thank You for caring about our hearts, not just our actions. Help us notice what we’re letting in, and give us the wisdom to guard what shapes us. May everything that flows from our hearts this week point back to You. Amen.
