Ambition on the Altar
Written by LaKeisha M • Anna Campus
Scripture
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Philippians 2:3 ESV
Lately, I’ve found myself wrestling with what humility really looks like. It’s not that I don’t want good things. I have dreams, aspirations, and opportunities I’d love to pursue. Yet there are moments when I watch others move ahead while I feel like I’m standing still. Sometimes it seems the sacrifices I’ve made for ministry have come at the expense of personal advancement, and if I’m honest, that’s hard.
The tension isn’t between right and wrong—it’s between what I want and what God is asking of me in this season. Philippians 2:3 reminds me that humility isn’t thinking less of myself; it’s choosing to place God’s purposes and the needs of others ahead of my own ambitions. That doesn’t mean my desires don’t matter. It means they no longer sit on the throne of my heart. The Holy Spirit continues to convict me with one question: Will what I do next glorify the Lord, or will it simply glorify me? That question changes everything. There is a deep freedom that comes when I trust God enough to believe that obedience is never wasted.
Every unseen sacrifice, every quiet act of service, and every opportunity surrendered into His hands is known by Him. My value is not determined by how quickly I advance compared to someone else, but by my willingness to faithfully follow wherever He leads. Comparison whispers that I’m being left behind. Humility reminds me that I cannot miss what God has ordained for me. If He asks me to serve while someone else is promoted, then His grace will sustain me there. And if promotion comes, I want it to be because it advances His kingdom, not my reputation. Today, I choose to lay down the need to keep score. I choose to celebrate others without resentment. I choose to trust that God’s timing is always better than my own. Because true humility isn’t losing myself, it is finding joy in making Christ known above all else.
Prayer: Father, search my heart and reveal every place where selfish ambition or comparison has taken root. Help me to genuinely rejoice with those You are blessing while trusting You with my own journey. Teach me to seek Your glory above my own recognition. May every decision I make point others to You and not to me. Strengthen me to serve faithfully, knowing that You see every sacrifice and that Your plans for my life are good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
