“People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7 NIV). As I reflected on this passage, one question stayed with me: What was it about David’s heart that caused God to choose him? Saul was still king, yet God was already looking for the next one. Jesse presented seven sons before Samuel. They looked capable. They looked qualified. Yet God rejected every one of them because He wasn’t looking at what people could see—He was looking at the heart.

Then Samuel asked, “Are these all your sons?” Jesse replied, “There is still the youngest, but he is tending the sheep.” That answer made me pause. Why was David the one in the field? What were the others doing? David had been given the lonely assignment of caring for sheep. He faced lions and bears. He protected what had been entrusted to him. No applause. No recognition. No audience. It would have been easy to become bitter, resentful, or entitled. Instead, David remained faithful. Perhaps that was what God saw. Not perfection. Not popularity. A heart willing to serve faithfully, even when no one was watching.

That question challenged me personally. At work, I sometimes find myself so focused on becoming a director that I forget to faithfully tend the assignment God has already given me. In difficult seasons of marriage, I can become so focused on what isn’t happening that I forget to ask, “How am I tending what God has entrusted to me?” Maybe we all need to ask ourselves that question. Have I become distracted by the next opportunity while neglecting today’s assignment? Am I serving with gratitude, or with comparison? Am I tending the flock God has placed in my care, or wishing I had someone else’s? David’s brothers overlooked him. His father forgot to call him. But God saw him. The same God who saw David in the field sees you exactly where you are today. He sees every unseen act of obedience, every quiet sacrifice, every moment you choose faithfulness over resentment.

Prayer: Lord, give me a heart like David’s. Remove comparison, entitlement, and bitterness. Teach me to faithfully tend the people, responsibilities, and opportunities You have entrusted to me. Help me serve with integrity, even when no one is watching, knowing that Your approval is the only one that truly matters. When You look at my heart, may You find one that is fully devoted to You.
