Don’t Wait for Rock Bottom
Written by Angel L • Plano Campus
Scripture
11 When Solomon had finished the temple of the Lord and the royal palace, and had succeeded in carrying out all he had in mind to do in the temple of the Lord and in his own palace, 12 the Lord appeared to him at night and said: “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a temple for sacrifices.
13 “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:11-14
Is prayer steering your wheel, or is it just your spare tire? How do we stop waiting until we hit rock bottom before we come to God? A relationship without communication is no relationship at all. We wouldn’t go days without talking to our spouse, family, or closest friends, yet many of us only talk to God when life falls apart.
Prayer was never meant to be our last resort—it was meant to be our first response. When I deployed overseas to Kuwait as a newly promoted sergeant and the only female leader in my platoon, I experienced a level of loneliness I had never known. The people I expected to call didn’t. The care packages I hoped for never came. I felt forgotten and completely alone.
In that season, I found God in a way I never had before. I began attending a small chapel in the middle of the desert. Even when others didn’t go, I knew I needed to stop relying on my own strength and start depending on Him. As I learned to lead Soldiers who were counting on me, I realized I couldn’t be the leader I needed to be without God’s guidance. I also discovered the importance of surrounding myself with a community of believers who encouraged me to keep my faith strong.
In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God says, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face…then I will hear from heaven. and will heal their land.” So how do we build a relationship with God? Pray with purpose. Listen for His voice. Read His Word. Stay consistent. Prayer isn’t just for difficult seasons. It is how we stay connected to God every day. Don’t wait until life breaks you to seek Him. Let prayer be the steering wheel that guides your life, not the spare tire you reach for only in an emergency.
