Remember the Basics

Scripture

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Matthew 6:33 ESV

Life is so full of so many things. Let’s face it, “adulting” is challenging and life be “lifing.” We can find ourselves so caught up in trying to make things happen or work things out in our own strength. Maybe it shows up in stretching finances for school supplies, juggling rising costs, or trying to make ends meet in an economy that feels heavier every year. Or maybe it’s the quiet pressure of trying to be everything for everyone, managing work, caring for family, and still trying to show up with a smile even when your tank feels empty.

If we are not careful, we can find that we have been trying to carry our own burdens and cares alone. We can lose ourselves and become caught up in ritualistic behaviors instead of sincere rhythms that allow us to develop and grow. We may feel behind, and our hope can wane as we become distracted by things our Father never asked us to do. But when we take a moment to remember the basics, that is where we find our footing. At the foundation of our faith is a Father who desires a relationship with us.

He tells us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and then all these things will be added. So often, we seek the things we need or want instead of seeking Him first. In hindsight, we may find we never needed some of the things we were striving for. When you find yourself feeling stuck or like you cannot seem to get it together, stop, pause, and go back to the basics. Seek Him through His Word, prayer, community with other believers, and discipleship. By seeking Him first, we find peace.

Reflection:
1. What have you put before seeking God first?
2. What can you do today to refocus and release your anxieties to Him?

Prayer: Father, we thank You for Your love. Help us receive Your love today. Help us seek You first and believe in faith that You know exactly what we need and will provide. In Your name we pray, Amen.
