Just Go Across The Street!
Written by Nikki M · Garland Campus
Scripture
Do not call to mind the former things, or consider things of the past. Behold, I am going to do something new, now it will spring up; will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.
Isaiah 43:18-19 NASB
I enjoy walking through my neighborhood, and I usually follow the same route every time. One area of my walk has a beautiful canopy of trees that provides much-needed shade from the Texas sun. Unfortunately, after it rains, that same sidewalk collects puddles. I’ve tried everything to avoid them: hopping, skipping, walking through the grass. Then one day, as I approached those familiar puddles, God gave me the simplest solution: Just go across the street! So I did.
There were no beautiful trees on the other side, but there weren’t any puddles either! As I walked, I noticed something else: my perspective changed. I could see my neighborhood from a completely different vantage point. Isaiah 43:18-19 reminds us that God was doing something new among His people and called them to recognize it.
Sometimes we become so accustomed to what is familiar that we keep trying to make the familiar work. We hop. We skip. We walk through the mud. Meanwhile, God may be inviting us to see something differently. What situation in your life have you been approaching the same way simply because that’s the way you’ve always done it? Ask God to show you whether your circumstances need to change or whether your position and perspective need to change. For me, the neighborhood didn’t change. My position did.
Prayer: Father, help us recognize the new things You are doing. Give us the wisdom to release familiar ways of thinking when they keep us from seeing what You want to show us. Help us trust Your direction and have the courage to move when You lead us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
