The Invitation

Scripture

After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.

John 11:28 NIV

The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” Grief can make us sit still. When Martha heard Jesus was coming, she immediately went to meet Him. Mary stayed home. Both sisters were grieving the same brother, but grief had affected them differently. Martha met Jesus on the road and poured out her disappointment: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jesus did not dismiss her pain. He met Martha in it and gave her something she needed: revelation. “I am the resurrection and the life.”

Then Martha did something beautiful. She went back to Mary, pulled her aside privately, and said, “The Teacher is here and is asking for you.” Martha had encountered Jesus in her grief, then returned to invite her sister to encounter Him too. Mary got up and went. But Jesus did not meet Mary in exactly the same way He met Martha. Mary fell at His feet weeping. Instead of responding with a theological conversation, Jesus entered her sorrow. Jesus wept. Martha needed revelation. Mary needed compassion.

Jesus gave each sister what she needed. Sometimes grief, disappointment, fear, or exhaustion can leave us sitting in places we were never meant to remain. And sometimes God uses someone who has already encountered Him to whisper an invitation: The Teacher is here. He is calling for you. Maybe today you are Mary, and you need the invitation. Or perhaps you are Martha, and God is sending you back for someone else. Either way, get up and go to Jesus. He will meet you where you are.

Prayer: Jesus, when life overwhelms us, help us hear Your invitation. Give us the courage to come to You and the compassion to invite others to do the same. Meet each of us with exactly what we need. Amen.
