Seek Him First

It’s easy to read Psalm 37:4 and assume it means God will give us everything we ask for. But David begins with one key word: delight. Delighting in the Lord means finding our greatest joy, satisfaction and security in Him rather than in our circumstances, accomplishments or the things we hope to receive. When our relationship with God becomes our highest priority, our hearts begin to change. He doesn’t just fulfill our desires—He transforms them. The things that matter most to Him begin to matter most to us.

There is a beautiful paradox in this verse. The more we pursue God for who He is instead of what He can give us, the more we discover that He is already giving us our greatest need: His presence. As we walk closely with Him, He refines our motives, redirects our ambitions and plants dreams in our hearts that reflect His purposes. Sometimes He fulfills long-held prayers exactly as we hoped. Other times He answers by leading us toward something even better than we imagined. Either way, we can trust that His plans flow from perfect wisdom and unfailing love.

Today, take a moment to ask yourself: What brings me the most delight? Is it success, relationships, comfort, or others’ approval? Or is it knowing Christ more deeply? As we intentionally delight in the Lord through prayer, worship, Scripture, and obedience, we position our hearts to experience His faithfulness in new ways. The promise of Psalm 37:4 isn’t simply that God grants wishes—it’s that He lovingly shapes our hearts until our deepest desires are found in Him and from that place, He faithfully fulfills every purpose He has for our lives.

Prayer: Father, teach me to delight in You above everything else. Help me to seek Your heart before I seek Your hand. Shape my desires to reflect Your will and give me the patience to trust Your timing. May my greatest joy always be found in Your presence. Amen.
