Walk by the Spirit

Written by Keith A  •  McKinney Campus

Scripture

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23 NASB

Recently, I caught myself saying things like, “my patience is wearing thin” or “it’s hard to love some people.” I was speaking as if I were the final authority on all things. I was acting as if the only thing that mattered was how I felt. I wasn’t seeing others as men and women created in God’s own image. I was complaining about things that GOD has given us, but I was not using the help that I have been given. I wasn’t being sensitive to God’s indwelling Spirit. In other words, I wasn’t walking by the Spirit. So, how do we walk by the Spirit?

First, to study God’s Word tells us exactly what God thinks and what God has commanded. We know that walking by the Spirit is not something that we’re doing in our own strength and talent, but is the supernatural leading of God’s Spirit. Second, continue in prayer, and we draw near to God. The more we pray and talk to God, the closer relationship we build. Romans 5:5 says that hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Therefore, walking in the Spirit is how we can have patience, have joy, have peace, and ultimately show unconditional love. This is the heart of the Bible: to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. We should show love to believers and use our gifts for the body. We are also to show love to nonbelievers whom we can find opportunity to share the Gospel. Galatians 5:16: “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh”.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for sending your Spirit. God, let us walk by Your Spirit and continuously be led by You, and not rely on our flesh. God, I want to draw close to You and know and do Your will to build Your Kingdom, Amen.
