Choosing Wisdom

Written by Demi S · Global Campus

Scripture

For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you scoff, you alone will bear it.

Proverbs 9:11-12 ESV

Sometimes I think about how many times I’ve had to repeat the same lessons in my life. I know those experiences helped shape me, but I often wonder how different things could have been if I had listened sooner and avoided some of the pain, disappointment, and consequences. As I grow in my walk with Christ, I am learning that wisdom is not just knowing better; it is choosing better.

Proverbs 9:11–12 reminds us that wisdom affects the direction of our lives. God gives us His Word, people who can encourage and correct us, and even experiences that teach us. But we still have a choice. We can listen, or we can continue down the same path. I’ve learned that something can be familiar, desired, or even feel right and still not be good for me. Wisdom teaches us to pause and ask, “God, what would honor You in this situation?” Sometimes wisdom means not reacting.

We don’t have to respond to everything we hear. We don’t have to prove ourselves to everyone. We don’t have to make decisions while we are angry, hurt, afraid, or emotional. Sometimes the wisest thing we can do is pause, pray, and allow God to direct our next step. Being wise does not mean we will never make mistakes. It means we are willing to learn from them. We can acknowledge where we were wrong, receive correction, and choose differently moving forward. Today, let’s choose wisdom over emotion, pride, fear, and familiarity. Let’s remember that just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should.

Prayer: God, give us wisdom to recognize Your direction, humility to receive correction, and strength to make choices that honor You. Help us learn the lesson when You teach it the first time. Amen.
