How Would I Know His Goodness?
Written by Elizabeth J · Plano Campus
Scripture
I sought the Lord and He answered me, and rescued me from all my fears. They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces will never be ashamed. This wretched man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
Psalm 34:4-8 NASB
Have you ever gone through a life-altering, identity-shattering circumstance? Something that makes you question who God really is and how He is working in your life? In 2023, I was diagnosed with a debilitating vocal cord disorder and found myself struggling to find answers or a resolution. It was a season of isolation, depression, confusion, and questioning God. “Why ME?” and “What now?!”
It became a time of reflection that I designated as my Psalm 23:2 season because God literally sat me down – from work, from my career ambitions, from my striving, and from my busyness to reveal that I had been walking in my own strength, apart from His will and definitely outside of His grace. It had become all about me proving who I was and performing at a high capacity so I wouldn’t be rejected – and to fill that void of rejection in me.
While I was isolated in this season, I sincerely sought God, and He surrounded me. He walked me through a season of uncertainty and covered me with His wisdom and security. In the midst of it all, He started to heal and restore me. He shielded me from job loss while opening up the opportunity for true rest, and eventually an even better job. Most importantly, He gave me clarity of vision, showing me how to be a more present wife and mother. I recently heard a song that said if I’d never been through any hardships or trials, how would I know how good God is? When we walk with God, our trials are a testament to God’s character, God’s truth, and God’s love for us. I pray you continually seek the God who delivers us from our fears and saves us from our troubles, and that you ultimately experience His goodness.
