People Are Not Projects

Some of my closest friendships have lasted through different churches, ministries, jobs, and seasons of life. What sustained those relationships was never simply proximity or having the same interests. We learned to value one another as people. There was an understanding that we would grow together, rather than one person always being responsible for the growth of the other. I have also experienced relationships that became distant once I was no longer part of the same church, ministry, or workplace. Those experiences have caused me to ask: Do we value people for who they are, or primarily for the role they fill in our lives?
Paul’s words to the Thessalonians reveal something beautiful about Christian relationship. He and his companions did not merely bring people a message. They shared their lives because the people had become dear to them. The gospel was central, yet genuine affection and shared life accompanied it. Our desire for others to know Christ should never prevent us from taking the time to know them. People are not projects to fix, clients to gain, or assignments to complete. They are image-bearers whom God has called us to love.
Healthy Christian relationships also leave room for mutual growth. We can encourage, teach, and serve others while remaining humble enough to recognize that God may use them to shape us too. Today, consider one person you regularly encounter. Ask yourself whether you value that person beyond the role they currently fill. Take time to ask a sincere question, listen without preparing your response, and learn something about them you did not know before.
Reflection: Do I value the people God has placed around me for who they are, or primarily for what I can give, gain, or accomplish through the relationship?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us see people as You see them. Teach us to love others without reducing them to projects, roles, or assignments. Give us humility to listen, patience to know one another, and willingness to grow together as we share Your truth and our lives in genuine love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
