What If God Shows Me?
Written by Rachel L • Plano Campus
Scripture
Search me, God, and know my heart; Put me to the test and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there is any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.
Psalm 139:23-24 NASB
There are so many questions we get to ask the Lord. Some come from a place of frustration, when we want immediate answers, comfort, or clarity. Other times, our questions come from a desire to know more about God, His character, His ways, and His will.
But Psalm 139:23–24 leads me to ask a different kind of question: Lord, what is in my heart that shouldn’t be? I think that is a pretty bold question because, depending on the answer, I may have to change. If God reveals something in me that is not pleasing to Him, an attitude, a motive, a wound, a habit, a thought pattern, or a way of responding, then I have to decide what I will do with what He shows me. I don’t want something hiding in me, something I may not readily recognize, to keep me from being close to God. I want to be willing to see what He sees and trust Him enough to lead me toward what is better. And I think David’s prayer is hopeful because he does not only ask God to reveal what is wrong. He also asks God to lead him.
God’s searching is not simply about exposing us. It is also about guiding us. He reveals what needs attention because He loves us enough to lead us into something better. So, search me, God. Today, take a quiet moment and ask: Lord, what is in my heart that shouldn’t be? Then be willing to sit with what He graciously reveals and trust His leading. Maybe it is a different way of thinking. Maybe it is a different way of responding. Whatever you become aware of that needs to change, trust the Lord for the grace to do it.
Prayer: Lord, help me to desire Your searching. Give me a heart that is willing to be examined by You. Help me to be grieved by what grieves You and willing to release anything that does not please You. Help me trust that when You reveal something in me, You lovingly lead me forward. Search me, know me, and lead me in Your way, Amen.
