When Being Busy Becomes the Rhythm
Written by Teresa N • Plano Campus
Scripture
Be still, and know that I am God.
Psalm 46:10 NKJV
My days are full. I have my husband, my home, my insurance agency, my marketing agency, Leadership College, the Food 4 The Soul program, the food pantry, and all the other programs I manage through my non-profit. A lot of what I do is helping people, supporting the church, and serving the community. Because so much of it is good work, I can easily tell myself, “I’m doing God’s work.” But God has been showing me that doing work for Him is not the same as spending time with Him. I can pray in the morning, listen to sermons and Bible teachings while I work, and still realize that most of my day is built around tasks, deadlines, helping others, and making sure everything gets done.
If I am awake for 18 hours and give God only a small portion of intentional time, I have to ask myself what has really become the center of my rhythm. Sometimes my need to complete everything has become more sacred than simply sitting still with God. Psalm 46:10 reminds me that God is not always asking me to do more. Sometimes He is asking me to stop. To be still. To listen. To spend time with Him without multitasking, planning, fixing, or checking off another task. Today, I am learning that my relationship with God cannot just fit around my schedule. My schedule has to make room for Him.
Prayer: Lord, help me not become so busy taking care of everything that I forget to simply be with You. Teach me to slow down, listen, and make time with You a true part of my daily rhythm, Amen.
